Transmural myocardial ischaemia complicating recovery after dobutamine-atropine stress echocardiography in patients with non-significant coronary art…

2011

In the proposed selection of cases, traditional imaging is integrated with contemporary diagnostic tools available in the cath-lab to navigate the potential mechanisms underlying a very rare complication occurring in the recovery phase of dobutamine-atropine stress echocardiography. The data, collected in a time frame of nearly 15 years, provide interesting elements to possibly evolve from speculative considerations to plausible confirmation of the candidate pathophysiological mechanism mediating the occurrence of transmural myocardial ischaemia after beta-blockers administration.

Telmisartan cardioprotects from the ischaemic/hypoxic damage through a miR‐1‐dependent pathway

2019

The aim of this study was to investigate whether telmisartan protects the heart from the ischaemia/reperfusion damage through a local microRNA-1 modulation. Studies on the myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury in vivo and on the cardiomyocyte hypoxia/reoxygenation damage in vitro were done. In vivo, male Sprague-Dawley rats administered for 3 weeks with telmisartan 12 mg/kg/d by gastric gavage underwent ischaemia/reperfusion of the left descending coronary artery. In these rats, infarct size measurement, ELISA, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse transcriptase real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that expressions of connexin 43, potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily Q member …

Immunohistochemical study on dystrophin expression in CAD-related sudden cardiac death: a marker of early myocardial ischaemia

2018

The aims of this study were to assess if dystrophin can be a tool for the forensic evaluation of sudden cardiac death due to coronary atherosclerotic disease (CAD) and particularly if it can be a marker of early myocardial ischaemia. Then in this investigation, the dystrophin was compared to C5b-9 and fibronectin to analyze if there are some differences in the expression of these proteins. Two groups of CAD-related sudden cardiac death, respectively the group 1 with gross and/or histological evidence and the group 2 with no specific histological signs of myocardial ischaemia were used. A third group formed by cases of acute mechanical asphyxiation was used as a control. The immunohistochemi…

Reductive stress in pathophysiology

2017

Oxidative stress, as defined by Sies more than thirty years ago, has received much attention and has served as an important intellectual tool to understand the pathophysiology of many diseases and also of normal processes like ageing. However, recently the idea that the cells might suffer from reductive rather than oxidative stress and that such stress may be relevant in pathophysiology has gained momentum. Some time ago we defined reductive stress as a “as a pathophysiological situation in which the cell becomes more reduced than in the normal, resting state”. We postulated that reductive stress might be due, at least in part to a “small but persistent generation of oxidants that results i…
